11/13/05: Thank You and Good Night

You're not gonna believe this shit... remember how the beer ran out about halfway through the farewell show? (You WERE there, right?) Well, about an hour after the show ended and most folks had gone their merry way, we found two ice cold kegs we forgot to tap, tucked behind the amps. Imagine that? We just polished them off.

Sike...

If we can be serious for just a moment, we'd like to thank one and all who came to Philadelphia to wish us a fond farewell. Some of you stumbled down the block. Some trekked all the way from California, Minnesota, Virginia and Ohio. We were really, really moved. It was one of those rare nights when everything exceeded our expectations. Well, all except the part about the beer running out two hours earlier than expected.
Honestly, it meant a whole lot to us. Ear-to-ear grins all around. You're a really spectacular bunch of friends and fans.

It was depressing as fuck loading out. The cold water in the face signaling, "Wow, that's it..." Well, if that really WAS it (it was, trust us...) we couldn't have dreamed of a better way to put an exclamation point on seven years of rock, roll, ups, downs, ins, outs, and hangovers.

As we've said repeatedly, we feel like we're ending this at an appropriate time. We're still friends, we don't think we've sullied our good name, and we all still have a burning itch to make noise. Although that itch could very well be something we picked up in Amsterdam last fall. So, don't be at all shocked to see us doing something together somewhere down the line - in a studio, on a stage, in an alley in south
Philadelphia - for a worthy cause or just to simply have a little fun.

Some of you have been asking for a set list and photos from the farewell show. You can find the set list HERE and more photos HERE. If you have some pix or anything else you'd like to share, send it our way. And yes, Pro Tools and video cameras were rolling. Not sure what will come of it, but hopefully some sounds and video will be available in
some form, some day.

The Web site will stay alive. As an archive, a store for all your Bigger Lovers needs and as a way to stay updated on our post-TBL activities.

Before we sign off, some quick shout-outs:

Mike Comstock at Indre for lending us the keys to the kingdom and giving us a cheap place to rehearse for the last couple of years.

Pete Girgenti at Indre for making us sound like a million bucks and letting us stay 'til 4:00 am.

New Radiant Storm King for coming down from Massachusettes and making some noise.

Dave Kasper at Liquid Intelligence for hooking us up with 420 cans of PBR.

Jeff Scioli for the acoustic guitar.

Phil Young for tickling the electric ivories.

Joey Sweeney for spinning.

Steve Stone for filming.

Aaron and Dan for selling merch and working the door.

Angie Carlson, Jill Sweeney and Steven King of Yep Roc/Red Eye for working damn hard on our behalf and coming out to see us off (tell Glenn & Tor the check's in the mail...)

All y'all, for coming out.

Goodbye,

-TBL

Just a last, relatively brief reminder regarding this farewell show (THIS SATURDAY, NOV. 5, INDRE STUDIOS, 8:00 PM) bidness.

First off, we're doing a little bit of radio promotion in advance. You can hear Pat phoning it in, literally, to WFMU/Jersey City on Joe Belock's excellent "Three Card Monte" show Tuesday, between noon and 3:00 pm. You can hear a couple Lovers playing acoustic and chatting (Bret and Scott, maybe Pat, too) Thursday around 3:00 pm on Y100rocks.com. Finally, you can hear random phone messages (really) from the band all week on Sirius' Left of Center, channel 26 on the "Cooking With Pappi"show, weekdays from noon-6:00 pm.

Second, we're really, really jazzed to announce that a close member of the Lovers' extended family will be lending a hand on keys for the farewell show. Put your hands together and give a big tri-state area welcome for Delaware's own Phil Young, forever a member of the fabulous Knobs, currently a member of the Cocks.

Third, advance tix will remain on sale through our site until Friday. They're going at a fairly brisk pace. Honest. If you're feeling lucky, there'll be some giveaways happening throughout the week from show co-sponsor Philebrity, on WPRB/Princeton (Wednesday night with Jon Solomon, I'm pretty sure), and Y100rocks.com. Maybe a couple of
other places, too.

Fourth, The Bigger Lovers Out-of-Towners exchange program is still in effect. Coming from, say, Duluth and need a place to crash for the show? Go to our message board or MySpace site and plead your case. Maybe some kind soul will hook you up. Maybe it'll be Ed's new buddy.

Fifth, hope to see you at the show. Doors at 8:00, very special guests New Radiant Storm King at 9:00, Bigger Lovers for one last time - playing ALL the hits and then some - around 10:00-ish. Party-on afterwards. DJ Joey Sweeney filling in the margins. All merch will be on sale, for pretty cheap, too.

Bigger Lovers Farewell Show

that is all,

10/14/05:

We hear some of you are traveling great distances to attend this farewell show of ours. We're honored. We've also heard from others who'd like to attend, but are on the fence because of budget concerns. While we can't do anything about air fare, train fare or gas prices, we do have a hair-brained scheme cooked up to help those of you looking to rock econo for the Lovers farewell fete. Announcing...

THE BIGGER LOVERS OUT-OF-TOWNERS EXCHANGE PROGRAM

It's simple: go to our message board (or our MySpace site, if you prefer). Post that you're looking for a place to crash, or that you're offering to host someone(s) for the show. If you find a match, hook it up. Just be kind enough to return the favor if your host ever travels to your city for a farewell show and is in need of lodging. And, hey, if a little somethin'-somethin' materializes, be kind enough to give us the story (we'll be doing a post-show wrap on the site) before Penthouse Forum. Man, we can already hear the awkward silences over mimosas on Sunday morning while a bootleg of the forthcoming Db's spins in the background...

"So, umm, have you, umm, heard the new Clientele album??"
"No (30 second pause)... can I use your phone?"

Our friends and fans are a kind lot, so we have no reservations about facilitating this exchange. Please be advised that we cannot assume responsibility for the manners, hygiene or record collections of possible guests and/or hosts. We're not going there. ALSO, we're happy to announce that advance tickets are for sale right here on the site. This is particularly useful if you're coming in from out of town and are worried about it being sold out by the time you get here. They're available online until the day before the show. Get 'em here.

What else? Oh yeah, Ed and Scott have been raiding the archives and updating the site with old photos & show posters, so have a look - there's much more to come. Pat's tour diaries are back up, too.

Expect more details about the show soon, and announcements regarding some radio appearances the boys will be doing in advance.

10/03/05: WORST-KEPT SECRET IN PHILADELPHIA TRUE:
BIGGER LOVERS TO CALL IT A DAY WITH FAREWELL SHOW NOV. 5

It’s hardly the Beatles disbanding, nor is it as bitter a pill to swallow as discovering that the mysterious Canadian studio group Klaatu were, in fact, NOT the Beatles.

Nevertheless, the following news will come as a disappointment to fans of melodic, yet lovingly distressed guitar pop the world over: after seven years, three albums, a clutch of singles and compilation tracks, and a good many international concert engagements, The Bigger Lovers are calling it a day. But not before they make one last bit of racket in the form of a farewell show dubbed: “Thank you. Good night. T-shirts and records in the foyer. Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out. Get home safely.”

The Bigger Lovers’ snappily titled farewell show will happen SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 9:00 PM, at Indre Recording Studios (1418 S. Darien St., which is off of Reed St. between 8th and 9th in South Philly). Very special guests New Radiant Storm King will open. Free beer will be served. Admission is 10 U.S. Dollars. There will be no advance ticket sales. There will be no guest list. There will be no bands that cover more than one Soft Boys song still standing after this special night. There will be no more Bigger Lovers shows after this.

Says rhythm guitarist and co-vocalist, Bret Tobias: "You know, we've been discussing this for a while, and we all agreed that the band has drawn to its logical conclusion and it's better to put this to bed while we can still remain friends. But if you cut all the shit, it's really Scott's fault."

As for the future? Well, some things will stay the same: Pat (-rick Berkery, drums) will still man the drum kit for the Pernice Brothers, who have just completed a 3-month tour in support of their latest album, Discover a Lovelier You. The rest of the Lovers will be returning to the womb: Bret took his first drumming gig in nearly a decade and is playing shows with Philadelphia’s B.C. Camplight, who have a new record out (Hide, Run Away) on One Little Indian; Ed (Hogarty, lead guitar) is currently gearing up for a reunion of sorts with his ex-wife, Lefty's Deceiver, who are planning some shows for this fall; and Scott (Jefferson, bass/vocals) is resuscitating the Diane Linkletter Experience moniker and continuing to record and perform, mainly as an excuse to create quirky flyers.

Some things remain unclear. The Lovers had completed work on six new tracks in the spring; some pretty amazing stuff, really. There’s a good chance said songs will turn up in some form, somewhere, at some point, maybe.

But that's for later. For now, the boys' main focus is arguing over the set list. And whether or not to finally let Pat do a drum solo.

Visit www.thebiggerlovers.com religiously these next few weeks for frequent updates with archival materials, show details, various ephemera, and info on a very special, potentially scintillating out-of-towners lodging exchange program. Visit 'em at My Space (www.myspace.com/thebiggerlovers), too.

For more info, interview requests, remaining promotional materials, etc., contact Angie Carlson at Yep Roc: angie@yeproc.com.

09/28/05: October November Show Date

Due to a scheduling conflict, that October 8 show has been moved to November 5. See you there...

In the meantime, join up with us at The Bigger Lovers MySpace site.

06/14/05: The Bigger Lovers This Friday (June 17)

Hey -

I'm sweatin' like a whore in church over here, so let's make this quick:

The Bigger Lovers are playing but one gig this summer. Contrary to City Hall backroom conjecture - and despite the best efforts of councilman/uber fan Michael Nutter (no shit) - it won't be on the Smoked Joint Sidestage at Live 8. It'll be:

THIS FRIDAY, JUNE 17: PLAIN PARADE PRESENTS Doug Gillard (ex-GBV) w/ THE BIGGER LOVERS and A-Sides at Tritone, 1508 South St., 11:00 pm.

We're in the middle slot. It'll be loud, sweaty & intimate. What else?? Expect mostly familiar jams, some covers, and whatever else we can cook up. We haven't exactly been working out the kinks on a locked-out soundstage. Embrace the blemishes.

We recently spent five days sequestered in P.B.'s Mercer County, NJ home, working on six brand new songs that - hand to God - represent some of the most interesting stuff we've done to date. Big thanks to our pal Tony Goddess for coming on down from Boston to lend his ears, good mics, and mic pre's. We'll likely revisit these songs and some others when P.B. returns from the first round of Pernice Brothers touring late in the summer.

In the meantime, join up with us at The Bigger Lovers MySpace site.

That's all for now, everyone.

05/16/05: Department of Misinformation

Just a quick update for the moment, folks. First of all, for those of you in the Philadelphia area who may have seen the listing in the local papers stating that the Bigger Lovers will be guest DJs upstairs at the Khyber Tuesday night (5/17), that is an unfortunate misprint. It'll happen some night in the near future, but not this Tuesday. Joey Sweeney will be there, though, so head on over anyway and ask him if he has any good Echo and the Bunnymen anecdotes.

Now for those of you in the Southern Delaware area who may have see the listing in the papers announcing that the Bigger Lovers will be playing "unplugged" at the Dogfish Head Brew Pub on May 21, that is definitely partially true. Scott Jefferson will be presenting the songs of the Bigger Lovers intimate-style with just an acoustic guitar between you and the man himself - not to be missed.

That same night, Bret will be doing the same thing at The Speckled Hen (610-685-8511) in Reading, PA. You don't want to miss this one either, so your best bet is to charter a small plane and fly from one show to the other, sort of like Phil Collins did at Live Aid.

Completely true: The Bigger Lovers have invited Tony Goddess (Papas Fritas) to come down from Boston and sit behind the mixing desk for a while, and he has graciously accepted. Work begins early June, and will build on the tracks we've been developing over the past few months. There's a new Quicktime video on the media page documenting some of our progress.

Speaking of new, check out our MySpace site, which features a demo of a new song called "Talon Show." Let us know what you think.

03/19/05: Another Day, Another Track

Greetings from somewhere between New York and Philadelphia. It’s a lovely day, I’m 33 today, and with spring just a tick of the clock away, its time to update one and all of the goings-on in Bigger Lover-land.

We’re working, slowly, methodically and undercover of self-imposed darkness on a new set of songs we hope will congeal into a fourth studio LP at some point. That point won’t likely be until much later in 2005, or, perhaps even 2006. We’ve all got ideas in various stages of readiness. And, at least at the outset, plan on doing a bulk of the heavy lifting required to record a rock and roll album on our own. Other folks might come down to the basement(s) to lend a hand along the way – some names you’ll recognize from the liner notes, some brand new to the Lovers family – but for now, it’s just us four, bashing, strumming, harmonizing, tickling the ivories, and volleying ideas back and forth in hopes of making something that sounds familiar but glows with re-invigoration. Some who carry their record collections on little white cigarette pack-sized doodads fear the LP is a concept whose days are entering the twilight. We respectfully beg to differ, and our plan is to deliver something that backs up our case in no uncertain, and very hummable terms.

We can’t say for sure when or where this album we’re working on will appear. We invite one and all to check up periodically on our progress. We’ll have pictures, and maybe even some downloads to show that we’re not just sitting around listening to the tree surgeons yell at each other in Spanish right outside our office window…. Hold on for a second…. Whew… It turns out there was just a discrepancy over where they were going for lunch. I get a little antsy when there’s a wood chipper in my driveway - my curse for seeing Fargo one too many times.

Anyway, please stay tuned. We’re working on something good… promise. Rock with guitars and drums ain’t dead, we’re still here, and opening day is just a couple of weeks away. Things are always looking up.

Thanks,

-PB/TBL

03/17/05: Happy Birthday, Dear Pat. Happy Birthday To You.

We put Pat to work last night, despite it being his birthday eve. Never one to show restraint, Pat insisted on not just doubling his drum track, but quadrupling it. The effect is not unlike listening to the Merchantville Fife and Drum Corps from a distance - perfect. We celebrated by imbibing what was at hand: tiny bottles of Jack Daniels Watermelon Country Cocktails (liquid Jolly Ranchers!) and... Zima.

Check back for periodic updates on our progress.

03/06/05: Commencing Record #4

Greetings from the bowels of TBL HQ in Philadelphia, where the initial laying down of tracks is about to begin. We've got our "A" list, we've got our "B" list, and we're building a chicken coop in the corner of the live room for Ed to sit in while he's tracking. He read somewhere that it helps the vibe...

Check back for periodic updates on our progress.

1/17/05: A sad goodbye

On December 27, the Bigger Lovers bade farewell to our very dear friend,
Miles the cat. He was nearly ten. As the only semi-apocryphal story
goes, Miles' nickname, the "bigger lover", had such a ring to it that we
pluralized it and took it for our own. You see, he was a good 12 pounds
heavier than his companion, Audrey, who was already our "big lover."
(For a two year stretch grammar dictated that Miles be re-dubbed the
"biggest lover." However, the latecomer who affected said change,
Stanley, was also an early-leaver (brain tumor), so Miles' original nickname
was soon restored.) At his peak, Miles was a 24-pound puddle of love.
His interests were sleeping, stretching, biting the back of Audrey's
neck, yawning, and collapsing the chest cavities of his owners in the
middle of the night. Despite his lust for leisure, Miles was known for
enthusiastically terrorizing veterinarians. He was one of those rare
cats who would transform into something completely unrecognizable, like a
feline Bruce Banner. He once escaped the grasp of two leather-gloved
handlers, broke through the net with which they tried to capture him,
and finally had to be fully tranquilized and fitted with a leather
muzzle. The tranquilizer incapacitated every muscle in his body, with the
exception of those that control the voice box. He couldn't lift a paw,
but howled like he was being burned alive. During his final vet visit
his utter calmness was disconcerting, and indicated how serious a
problem we had on our hands. Ain't much you can do about lung cancer. The
poor bugger will be sorely missed.

In happier news, The Bigger Lovers' This Affair Never Happened... record made several best-of-2004 lists, including Buffalo's ARTVOICE and Philadelphia's City Paper. Stay tuned for further developments on the new record...

Stay warm,

TBL

1/27/04: Two Shows This Weekend

Hello from freezing cold, post-Thanksgiving Philadelphia. Figured it was high time we give you a little update about what's doing in our world.

First off, we're playing two shows this weekend. Two special, super-fantastic, we're-only-in-it-for-the-money blowouts with some very good friends. The details:

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3 - KHYBER, PHILADELPHIA
We headline a show featuring National Eye, Audible, and Jay Laughlin of Garden State. New songs, old songs, holiday cheer, you know the drill.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4 - SILO, READING
We open for Berks County's finest. No, silly, not the girls of Al's Diamond Cabaret, but Frog Holler, who'll be celebrating the release of their new EP. As a younger man, I saw Blue Oyster Cult rock this room raw on the Club Ninja tour. Think I saw the Fixx Mach V here, as well. Good times, for sure.

After these shows, we're going deep, deep, deep underground. We're working in new ways on new material which may end up on a new album at some point in the future. The deal is this: every record we've done has been written, demo'd, rehearsed, recorded, and mixed in the interest of a schedule. For example, here's a page from my 2002 dayplanner regarding the Honey in the Hive sessions:

"Record from the 5th to the 25th, mix from the 26th to the 30th, so we can have it to the plant by the 5th, so the boys at the label can get it to the midwest record stores by the 18th, so college radio can have it by the 28th, so we can tour the southeast with Bobby Bare next summer."

That's no way to live, let alone make rock music. To that end, the next few months are pretty wide open. We'll be hunkering down alone, pairing up and getting together as a unit to cook up some new tunes in our respective laboratories. We've got the means to do a bulk - if not all of it - on our own. I think we've got the balls, too. We'll get to a certain point, see where we're at, and take it from there. No timetable = no rush. No idea what it'll sound like. I can tell you that our m.o. going into this (to a certain degree) is to do the opposite of everything we would normally do. Kinda like the Seinfeld episode ("The Opposite," Season 5, Episode 22) where George orders chicken salad on rye instead of tuna on toast and ends up getting hired by the Yankees. We'll see how it goes.

In other news: we're having a big holiday sale on the Web site. All discs and t-shirts are just $10 now through the end of Xmas. Shipping remains the same. Buy some stuff, would ya??

Finally, on a personal note, I (P.B.) do solemnly apologize that I've yet to author a suitable European tour diary. I feel very guilty about this because at least three or four of you have cornered me over the years pledging your love for the beastly 8,700 word (double-spaced!!) travelogues. Rest assured, our recent trip to Holland and Belgium was a blast -- we have the pictures to prove it. For various reasons, I've had nary a minute for any type of frivolity (I'm moving BACK to New Jersey - exit 7A - but that's a whole 'nother 8,700 word story in itself) since our return in mid-October. So there'll be no writing of how we saw one Dutchman cold-cocking another Dutchman - seemingly without provocation - on a narrow Amsterdam street just as we finished telling our tour manager how civilized and decent we find the Dutch as a people to be. There'll be no mention of the decadent tomfoolery in Gronignen, at the club where everyone from U2 to Pavement has played. Not a syllable will be uttered about the ghastly looks you get when asking for more than one topping on your Belgian waffle in Belgium. Won't say a peep about the Red Light District, coffee shops, Golden Earring, Van Gogh, the Sadies, Beaver Nelson and Scrappy Jud, Bart's Mom, Rockabilly Guy, Kelly Villis, Viskeytown, Slaid Cleeves, Vilco, or the toilets. Maybe someday. By which time, the stories will be as relevant as a Dice Clay impersonation (I do a fairly good one, actually... ).

Sorry, this was supposed to be a little update, right? Hope to see you this weekend...

-TBL

10/19/04: Back in the States...

...Safe and sound in Philly, and before the jet lag completely wears off, we'd like to give a big thanks to all the people in Holland and Belgium who came out to see us. Pictures from the tour are up on the images page. Special thanks go out to tour manager extraordinaire Bart Matthias, as well as all the folks at Yep Roc and Belmont who helped organize the trip.

Nothing finalized yet, but we have a few shows in the works for Philadelphia and the surrounding area before the end of the year, as well as more extensive touring come 2005. On top of that, new songs are bubbling to the surface, which we'll be demoing as they come. New album can't be far behind, can it?

Thanks, and check back soon.

09/28/04: The Bigger Lovers Go Dutch, Then Play Local

Just running out the door to catch a flight to the land of clogs and Heineken, but wanted to let you know about a just-added Philly show that will commence immediately upon our return. On Monday, October 11, we're playing an early, all-ages show at the North Star (no worries, you can still booze). Doors are at 7:00, and we go on shortly thereafter, so this one is for those of you who've been scared off by our typical post-midnight slots. We'll be warming up for the Hope of the States.
As far as we know, Hope of the States are from the UK, share management with Franz Ferdinand, and are being touted as the next Radiohead. We'll be trying our damndest not to hold any of that against them. In the middle slot is Inouk, from Brooklyn.

To our friends in Holland and Belgium, please come say hello when we
visit your fine countries. Dates are posted below.

EUROPEAN TOUR:
9/29 - Amsterdam, NL VPRO Radio Live (radio thingy w/ the Sadies)
9/30 - Tilburg, NL, Cul de Sac
10/1 - Groningen, NL, Vera
10/2 - Eeklo, Belgium, N9
10/5 - Amsterdam, NL Maloe Melo
10/6 - Utrecht, NL, Ekko
10/7 - Rotterdam, NL, Rotown
10/8 - Roggel, NL, SJOR

09/08/04: The Bigger Lovers Play Local, Then Go Dutch

Good people -

Remember us? It's come to our attention (maybe yours, too) that The Bigger Lovers have been keeping a fairly low profile the last few months. Well, let's just say that in ways small and incredibly, life-alteringly large, 2004 ain't been our year (put it this way: In the Bigger Lovers "Behind the Music," 2004 is where the strings would come in).

But when all is said and done, bought and paid for, and returned for a sale item of equal or lesser value, we turn to what we know to bring us comfort; to make us feel useful: making music. Yeah, making music... that is what we do, innit? Sometimes it's hard to focus on that when as, the song says, "...the shit is ankle deep."

Anyway, here's the score: We're gettin' back at it, full friggin' bore. We've been holed up in our sweaty Philadelphia rehearsal digs playing seemingly every single one of our original compositions, and a lot of covers we've lost track of over the years. We're gearing up for a few local dates, then it's off to Holland and Belgium for our debut European trek. You'll notice there's a hometown date set for NEXT THURSDAY,
SEPT. 16 at the Khyber. A Thursday, you say?? That's right. Our crack research staff tells us there's 75% fewer assholes, fratboys, girls who should not go low-rise & belly-shirt under ANY circumstances, high-fiving white guys, Dubya supporters, and garden variety trouble makers lurking about Olde City on a weeknight as compared with a weekend. So, there you go. Dates as follows:

THIS SATURDAY!!! 9/11- West Chester, PA., Rex's (w/ Garden State) 10:00
NEXT WEDNESDAY 9/15 - New York City, Sin-E (w/ BC Camplight) 8:00
NEXT THURSDAY 9/16 - Philadelphia, Khyber (w/ Trouble With Sweeney & BC
Camplight) 9:00

EUROPEAN TOUR:
9/29 - Amsterdam, NL VPRO Radio Live (radio thingy w/ the Sadies)
9/30 - Tilburg, NL, Cul de Sac
10/1 - Groningen, NL, Vera
10/2 - Eeklo, Belgium, N9
10/3 - TBA
10/4 - TBA
10/5 - Amsterdam, NL Maloe Melo
10/6 - Utrecht, NL, Ekko
10/7 - Rotterdam, NL, Rotown
10/8 - Roggel, NL, SJOR

Plans are sketchy post-tour. Maybe some more U.S. dates? Maybe work on
a new record? Maybe a warm mug of cider and a plate of Vienna Fingers??
It's all possible...

Challah back,

-TBL

08/05/04: TBL minus EH, PB and SPJ

Good people -

Hope all of you are well. This Sunday, August 8, Bret will be laying it
bare and doing his best not to sully TBL's good name while rocking the
Khyber sans Ed/Pat/Scott. Bret has the distinction of warming up for TBL's
finely pedigreed label mates, Tres Chicas (they've been in Whiskeytown,
Glory Fountain, and possibly Let's Active). You can expect selections
from the Lovers catalogue, a large helping of meticulously chosen
covers, multiple mumbled introductions, much nervous laughter, and the
inevitable curse-laden complaints about monitors. Requests, within reason,
will be half-assedly granted.

Details:

Sunday, August 8
Khyber (uggghhh....)
2nd st. btw. Chestnut and Market
Bret will be first or second of three, so figger 9:30-ish.

Great gosh-o-mighty, please come.

-TBL

07/25/04: We know it's been a quiet summer, but rest assured we're aiming to make some more noise come fall, both here and abroad. More soon...

In the meantime, we're playing but one show this week, albeit a pretty important one. We'll be opening for the Pernice Brothers (with whom we share a drummer) at TT the Bear's in Cambridge, Mass. on Wednesday (7/28), with profits from the show benefitting "Victory for Kerry 2004."

We're on first, 9:00 p.m. sharp. The Pernice Brothers are also doing"Victory for Kerry" benefits the night before in Northampton, Mass. (7/27) and the following evening in New York (7/29). Do try to check them out if you can.

We'll be spicing the set up with a few covers, some in line with the vibe of the show. Maybe a special guest will even join us for a Fleetwood Mac cover. Don't worry, it's not "Don't Stop."

Good rock for a good cause.

More soon,

-TBL

hometown show in a few months, so come on out and make us feel welcome.
Please. Our friends from Berks County, Pa., Frog Holler, are also on the
bill.

05/24/04: Holiday Weekend With The Bigger Lovers

05/18/04: The Bigger Lovers WFMU radio broadcast - THIS AFTERNOON

Sorry for the late notice, but if you're in the metropolitan New York City area this Tuesday afternoon, May 18, tune into WFMU (91.1 or 90.1 depending on where you live) to hear a live performance we recorded for Joe Belock's "Three Card Monte" program, which airs between noon and 3:00 pm. You can also check it out on the Web at www.wfmu.org. The show was recorded the afternoon of the big "Friends" finale, so forgive the already-dated references. Not telling what time our set will actually air, but tune in for the whole thing. Joe has great taste, obviously, if he had us on...

04/28/04: The Bigger Lovers Heading Your Way

Sorry we haven't been in touch lately, but man, it's been a weird few weeks. We're back, however, and ready to have Pat's ass on the drummer's stool again (not that Mike Kennedy and Sean Byrne didn't do a fine job in his stead on ultra-short notice--thanks fellas), so look out.

Hoboken, Boston, DC, Baltimore, Chapel Hill, Atlanta, we are coming your way soon. Check the shows page for that and more. A few shows with Austin's finest, Grand Champeen, are on for June, and it looks like more ramblin' is on tap for late June/early july.

In the "They like us! they really, really like us!! (except for Pitchfork)" department, we've been gathering boatloads of press big and small. Keep an eye on the new Magnet, Harp, CMJ Monthly, Paste, and Performing Songwriter for some swell ink that should make you feel better about throwing down hard-earned cash for our Art. Ed's compiled a bunch of recent press Web links on the press page, so read up.

Ya know, we're not exactly sure where all this computer hooey is leading us, but you should know that, according to certain people, two-thirds of our records are available on iTunes and Napster and shit. If you can't be bothered to elbow your way to the 'B'
section of your local Coconuts, this seems to be an efficient way to get some large love. and if you're of the digital-saavy variety who consumes music in this way (or any way, really), tell your friends please. Gotta move some units, ya know?

Speaking of which, we've never employed a STREET TEAM, and we hate to ask too much of you, but for the love of god, will you please request us on KEXP? KEXP is a
wicked cool seattle radio station with a great audio stream (kexp.org). They're playing all of our goddamn friends' bands, so we're feeling... well, a little unattractive - and we are NOT unattractive! in fact, Bret was recently described in print as "couldn't possibly be any cuter." Take that, Matt Pond.

Shout out to the Pernice Brothers, who made our month by carting us along on their spring tour. Hope to see you soon, my friends.

We love you all,

-TBL

03/24/04: The Bigger Lovers/Pernice Brothers Tour

Just back from the all-you-can-eat barbecue/Tex-Mex buffet masquerading as a music conference known as South by Southwest. Thanks to all who watched us make noise, break amps and get drunk. Here's some random thoughts from the shindig:

*David Cross is the most approachable celebrity this side of Willard Scott
*Robyn Hitchcock must get dressed in the dark
*We don't like playing outside in parking lots
*The Dutch sure seem to love their alt-country (`Ohhhh, I love Villard Grant & Kelly Villis)
*Pete Yorn is short
*Lone Star is a better beer than Shiner Bock
*The "Fat Hive" is the cutest member of the Hives
*All Night Radio is a "Band to Watch"
*Philly to Austin is a long-ass drive, any way you slice it

So now that we're back, we're leaving again. As some of you may know, we share a drummer (one Patrick Berkery) with the Pernice Brothers. We're exploiting that connection to its fullest capacity as we open the following dates for the Pernice Brothers, starting this Friday in Buffalo. Check out all the dates on the show dates page.

More U.S. dates on tap for May and European dates in September and October. Stay tuned...

03/07/04: New Bigger Lovers Album Out This Tuesday

Album #3 from The Bigger Lovers - This Affair Never Happened... And Here Are Eleven Songs About It - is released this Tuesday (3/9) in North America (3/22 in Europe). Depending on when you're reading this and what state you're in (we're not talking geography) you might still be able to order a copy in advance from our web site or the Yep Roc site. If you do, you'll get a bonus Kustom Kuts EP with a couple of
unreleased tracks and a covers medley. No joke, no lie. Now take a calm-the-fuck-down pill and read on...

We trumpet This Affair's release with an in-store performance at Tower Records' Avenue of the Arts location in Philadelphia, THIS Tuesday at 5:30. No, we won't sign your record, so don't even axe. We play the mighty Mercury Lounge in New York the following night. As if that weren't enough, there's gonna be a hometown record release show of Caligula-esque proportions Saturday, March 13 at the North Star. There will also be corn served. A complete list of tour dates can be found here.

Hope we see you soon.

03/04/04: A Quick One Before We Go Away

The Bigger Lovers have one more tune-up gig before This Affair Never Happened... And Here Are Eleven Songs About It drops next Tuesday (3/9) in North America (3/22 in Europe, also on Yep Roc).

THIS SATURDAY, MARCH 6:
IOTA, ARLINGTON, VA., 2832 WILSON BLVD., 703.522.8340
We play first of three, going on at 9:30 sharp. It's a small room with great food so you might want to call ahead and make reservations. To paraphrase the inimitable Shecky Green, "Enjoy the Chilean sea bass... "

03/02/04: The TBL message board is back up - resume posting!

02/27/04: The Bigger Lovers This Weekend

A quick note to our friends in the Delaware Valley (the rest of you can skip ahead or read it all; it's entirely up to you...). We're playing a couple of low-key tune-up shows this weekend in West Chester, PA, and Newark, DE in hopes of getting back into game shape, ironing out the kinks, hammering the cramps, etc., before the new record comes out. We ain't played a gig since May, you see.

SATURDAY, FEB. 28, REX'S, 344 W.GAY ST., WEST CHESTER, PA.
(610.696.7769) w/Wise & Foolish Builders.

SUNDAY, FEB. 29, EAST END CAFE, 270 E. MAIN ST., NEWARK, DE.
(302.738.0880) w/The Knobs

We'll have copies of our forthcoming third record, "This Affair Never Happened... Are Here Are Eleven Songs About It" (officially out Mar. 9) to sell, along with spiffy new t-shirts. You can also order both through our store (www.thebiggerlovers.com/store.htm). You can preview a song from this record at the Yep Roc Records site by going here (http://www.yeproc.com/lockers/biggerlovers) and using the Yep Roc media player.

In other news... A tour is taking shape, with some one-off gigs set for Arlington, VA., New York City, and Philly before we head to Austin for SXSW duties. After that, we join the Pernice Bros. for a week of dates. Pat stays on board (he drums for them, too, ya know) with the Pernice clan until late April. The Lovers will return to live action shortly thereafter. See the entire schedule here (www.thebiggerlovers.com/tour.htm). While you're at it, check out Pat's responses to the "Justify Your Existence" questions on the Onion Web site (www.theonionavclub.com/4008/justify.html).
