The Bigger Lovers will be releasing their new album, "Honey in the Hive," on Tuesday, Aug. 27, via Yep Roc records. We hope this ends the months of rampant industry speculation, and settles a few office pools, too.
"Honey in the Hive" was recorded during the Winter Olympics here in Philadelphia under the watchful eyes of producer Thom Monahan (Pernice Brothers, Beachwood Sparks, J. Mascis) and was engineered by Brian McTear (Mazarin, Matt Pond PA, Swearing at Motorists). It'll feature 10 or 11 new compositions, including some recent additions to the live set like "Emmanuelle" (about the soft-porn starlette, not TV's "Webster"), "Half-Richard's," "Bought Your Ghost," and "A Simple How Are You."
About Yep Roc: Damn good folks, they are. It's a fine label based in Chapel Hill, N.C. with an impressive roster. Nick Lowe, Caitlin Cary, Chris Stamey, the Mayflies USA, Swag, and Los Straitjackets are among the folks who call Yep Roc home. And, now, so do The Bigger Lovers, thank you very much. We signed the deal over lite beers in a bar in downtown Charlotte this past Friday. Think we're kidding? Think again.
We'll be touring the U.S. in support of the record in the fall. Look for us at finer taprooms & VFW Halls everywhere. The record should see a European release in October (on Munich Records) with the possibility of some touring across the pond as well.

The new album is finished, but it'll be a little while until it's available. In the meantime, you can check out the new Lovers single on Tallboy Records. It should be out by this time next week (more details below), so get those turntables ready to go. We listened got the test pressing last week and determined that Bret's turntable is slow, and my turntable is really slow. Finally found one that was in ballpark, though - the record sounds great.
The Stiff Records tribute, The Stiff Generation, out on Groove Disques is nearing completion. The track list is set, and the Bigger Lovers take the lead slot with our version of Nick Lowe's "So it Goes." This one should be out some time in May.

The Bigger Lovers will begin recording their yet-to-be-titled second album February 1st at the palatial Miner Street Studios in Philadelphia. Production duties will be handled by Thom Monahan (Beachwood Sparks, Lilys, Pernice Brothers, among others) and the engineering duties will be handled by Brian McTear (Mazarin, Lefty's Deceiver, Matt Pond PA, among others). Recording and mixing are expected to last 3 weeks (we hope). The label releasing this record sometime in the second half of this year has yet to be determined, so get in touch if you'd like to throw your hat in the ring.
Finally, the 7" that has been mentioned here and there on this site for some time will be released this February on Arlington VA's Tallboy Records. Side B remains a cover of the Soft Boys' "Queen of Eyes," while the A side has been changed to "Private Party," a track that was recorded durring the Worrying sessions. The long delay was definitely our fault, not Tallboy's, but we think you'll agree it was worth the wait.
We'll be contributing our version of Nick Lowe's "So it Goes" to Groovedisques' Stiff Records compilation, The Stiff Generation, due out this April. Other bands on the comp include the Photon Band, Mathew Sweet, Frisbie, and many more. Stay tuned for details.

Better Days, a film by Pat Rodio, features several songs by the Bigger Lovers, including "Summer" and "Forever Is Not So Long," among others. We haven't seen it yet and only know roughly what it's about (Pat's keeping it under wraps, but did say it has to do with college friends dealing with post-college life), so we're excited to see the Philadelphia premiere. It takes place this Thursday, September 13th, 7pm, at the International House (3701 Chestnut Street, 215-387-5125) in West Philadelphia. Admission is free and open to all, so if you're in the Philadelphia area, come on by and check it out with us. And if you're not in the area, we'll keep you posted as the film travels to different cities and festivals.

The Arlington, VA label Tallboy Records will be releasing a 7" (bright red vinyl!) by the Bigger Lovers this September. In keeping with the theme of the label's previous releases, side A is an original ("The Imbecile I've Been") and side B is a cover ("The Queen of Eyes" by the Soft Boys). The songs were recorded during the same sessions as the songs for the Munich Records b-sides (see below).
The European release date for the Worrying record has been pushed back to September 3rd. The advance single (still out mid to late July) contains "Threadbare" and "A Year Ago" from the album, along with a non-album track called "Throwback."

It's official. The Netherlands' Munich Records will manufacture and distribute How I Learned To Stop Worrying throughout Europe. The album release date is August 26, with a CD single to appear sometime in July. The single (yet to be named) will contain several non-album b-sides, recorded this past Memorial Day weekend. The album itself will feature alternate (some even say "better") cover art. Stay tuned for more details.

The Lovers will be making their way down to Monticello, MS this August to participate in the music festival that accompanies the Rock and Roll Summer Camp weekend put on by the folks at Black Dog records. Mississippi in August - don't worry, we're already stocking up on the bug repellent. Also appearing are Blue Mountain, Beaver Nelson, The Kudzu Kings, Hangtown, The Tares, Fair River Station, and many more. Hopefully, we'll have time to lay down some tracks at the Black Dog studios (Route 1 Recording). Should be a blast.

The Bigger Lovers will be playing live on Y-100. On Friday, March 30th, tune your dial to 100.3 FM at around 9AM to hear us do an interview and a song or two on Y-100's morning show. Personally, I've never attempted to sing this early outside of the shower, so it should be interesting.
In other radio news, WXPN (88.5 FM) has added "Summer (Of Our First Hello)" to their regular rotation. Keep listening, they'll play it.

More radio news. The good folks at PowerPopRadio.com have just added "Threadbare" to their playlist. This is a great site with over 25 hours of music in rotation, which is about 24.5 more hours than your local commercial station. Definitely worth a visit.
Also, WXPN played all five and a half minutes of "Summer (of Our First Hello)" last Friday as their local pick of the day. Thanks, guys!
02/08/2001Tom Moon wrote about the Bigger Lovers for the Philadelphia Inquirer as part of a feature on local bands/musicians about to release records. Also written about were Swisher, King Britt, and a very dapper-looking Rick Henderson. Check it out.
TBL on the radio! It's come to our attention that Y100 (WPLY) in Philadelphia recently played "Forever Is Not So Long." If you have any interest in hearing The Bigger Lovers on your FM dial, be sure to call the station's hotline - 1-800-232-1003 - and ask for us. They'll never play us during the week, but you'll probably hear us on Dan Fein's damn fine Y-Not show, which airs Sunday evenings.

How I Learned To Stop Worrying is now available for pre-order through CDNow. Click on over if you're so inclined. Better yet, come to one of our shows and buy direct - it's cheaper (no shipping and handling).

Despite the fact that it was Bush's first full week in office, the Washington Post found room to review our January 24th show at the Velvet Lounge (much appreciated). You can check it out here. One thing - can anyone tell us what the word "choogling" means? It ain't in the Webster's...
**Update** Jim Slade of Nixon's Head/Groove Disques has reminded us that Creedence has a song called "Keep on Chooglin'". Check out this double entendre-laden song to hear for yourself, but suffice it to say it's all about the rolling, locomotive rhythm. Thanks, Jim.

Happy New Year, everyone. Yes, 2000 was bleak for the Lovers, but that's all behind us now.
The big news, of course, is that Black Dog Records will be releasing our long-awaited (by us) debut, How I Learned To Stop Worrying, on March 13, 2001. The mastering was completed just a
few weeks ago in beautiful Monticello, MS, where the band toiled for hours to achieve the perfect
blend of sound and emotion.

"Sounds mastered to me."
Yes, it does. Some kind words have already been said:
"The Bigger Lovers: Echoes of classic '60s Who, screaming power-pop guitar riffs, Nuggets-styled psychedelia updated for the millennium, all amidst luscious melodies and a rhythm section that soars. I think the Lovers were the Zombies in another lifetime."
--Bruce Warren, Program Director, WXPN/Philadelphia
"In this, the age of pre-packaged teenage pop and jock as rock star, The Bigger Lovers have gone ahead and made a great rock'n'roll record using real guitars and real drums, and if you don't think that's much you're either too young or too jaded."
--Ric Menck, Drummer Extraordinaire - Velvet Crush/Matthew Sweet
Too kind people, too kind. Check back here soon for tour dates.
